Herbert, who is chasing his first win as professional, is alongside amateur Brett Coletta at four-under par after two rounds.
The testing Brisbane Golf Club layout has made for some high scores over the first two days and only eight players are under par heading into the weekend.
After firing a two-under par 68 on day one, Herbert made the most of his early time on day two.
After starting his second round on the 10th hole, he played his first four holes in birdie, par, eagle and birdie to race to four-under par for the day and six-under par for the tournament.
He held a two-shot lead for much of his second round before bogeys on the fourth and eighth holes saw him slip back into a share for the lead with Coletta.
Kiwi Mark Brown and South Australia’s Max McCardle are lurking one shot further back.
