The man in his 20s pleaded guilty in the Bendigo Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday to driving offences.
The court heard he was drinking in a Kangaroo Flat pub before getting behind the wheel of his wife’s car to drive home at 12.30am on April 23.
He “fishtailed” on Lansell Street before driving into a fence in front of a house, where the car became stuck.
In the process of reversing, the man hit a parked car and then drove away, leaving behind the bumper bar and number plate.
At 1.20am, police responded to calls of a man causing a disturbance in Gordon Street.
The man had gotten out of his car – which was missing its front bumper and number plate – and proceeded to shout at bystanders and police before he was arrested.
Police were later informed about the crash in Lansell Street and entered the number plate into a database, finding it belonged to the man’s wife.
“They put two and two together,” Prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Chris Jones said.
He was also only on his learner’s permit, but was driving a V8 Holden Commodore.
Police later measured an 88.3 metre skid mark in the lead up to the crash site.
The court heard the man was diabetic, but had stopped measuring his insulin levels before drinking alcohol, causing his erratic behaviour.
Since the arrest, the man had voluntarily completed an accredited drink driving awareness program.
He avoided conviction and was fined $500, disqualified from driving for six months and placed on a 12-month good behaviour bond.
