In a church hall in Bendigo, aspiring occupational therapist Amy Whitten prepares to lead a dance class with a difference.
In addition to her studies, the La Trobe University masters student is the dance co-ordinator and co-director of all-abilities dance group BEAM.
Participants vary widely in ages and experience.
Among them are people with disabilities who have otherwise struggled with dance classes.
The BEAM program is a fusion of Miss Whitten’s dance experience and OT studies.
“The incidental therapy they get through dancing makes such a difference,” she said.
Parents of children involved in the program agreed.
Jen Hansford said her children looked forward to the days when they attended.
“It’s brought out a lot more confidence in them and they love to socialise with other children with disabilities,” she said.
BEAM has launched a Big Give campaign to provide “funky functional movement equipment and care packages” for its dancers and families.
With the Big Give ending on September 1, the campaign has achieved half its $2000 fundraising goal.
