The man was dragged underneath a car he was trying to start and he suffered serious head and leg injuries.
The man from Timor West, near Maryborough, was taken by air ambulance to The Alfred hospital. He was confirmed to be in a non-life-threatening condition last night. Witnesses said the man had stopped to help a stranger start his Jeep Cherokee four-wheel-drive that had broken down.
The man tried to get the car working when it reversed suddenly and he was pulled underneath. Senior Constable Brian Smith said the man was dragged 15 metres along the road on Alma Street, Maryborough.
He said the man was trapped under the right tyre of the vehicle when emergency services arrived. “It reversed all of a sudden,” he said.
“They couldn’t get it started so he put his foot on the accelerator and was stuck under the front right wheel. He had his left foot on the accelerator and right foot on the road when he was dragged under.
“He was being the good Samaritan and unfortunately it was a pretty horrible result.”
Police were last night investigating whether the car was put in reverse by accident or whether the car was faulty.
