ALMOST $30,000 was raised in Bendigo on the weekend for the annual Red Shield Appeal.
Tin rattlers were stationed at major intersections throughout the city, and those involved were thankful for the support of those who dug deep.
The final total of $29,731 was an 8.7 per cent decrease on last year’s amount of $32,580, but Bendigo appeal director Captain Craig Wood said it was still an encouraging result.
“We understand that there are people experiencing their own hardship and have still managed to dig deep to help others,” he said.
“Every dollar donated to the appeal will make a real difference in the lives of struggling Australians, both in this local community and across the country.
“We really want to thank each and every person who supported us this weekend, every donation is life changing.”
More than $4.7 million was raised for the Salvation Army across Australia on the weekend to provide funding for emergency relief for disadvantaged people and other crucial programs.
Demand for services has increased dramatically in Bendigo in recent years as more and more people face housing stress and unemployment, outlined in an annual survey.
Continued drought conditions in the state’s west and the recent dairy farmer crisis has placed a further strain on the Bendigo branch of the Salvation Army.
The Red Shield Appeal runs until June 30. To donate, visit salvationarmy.org.au or call 13 72 58.
