Volunteers for a historic steam train which connects Maldon to Castlemaine were left reeling this week when they discovered a first-class buffet carriage covered in graffiti. 

Maldon Police Leading Senior Constable David Rose estimated the cost of removing the graffiti at $2000.

“I’ve never seen anything like this in Maldon before,” Leading Senior Constable Rose said.

“It appears to have been well organised, by some individuals who appear to be a bit more … skilled, shall we say, than what you would normally see around here.”  

Volunteers discovered the graffiti when they entered the Victorian Goldfields Railway Station on Monday morning. 

Nothing was stolen and nothing damaged. 

“But it was pretty gutting for the volunteers who run this train to bring a bit of tourism to town basically,” Leading Senior Constable Rose said.

The leading senior constable said he was running the tags through a database in Melbourne to try and match the graffiti with other cases and determine where the vandals came from.
