The works will focus on improving pedestrian safety and include construction of a raised pedestrian crossing, kerbing and additional street lighting.
Member for Bendigo West Maree Edwards announced the state government’s $50,000 contribution to the project at the station yesterday.
“Castlemaine Station is our town’s key transport hub,” she said.
“I’m confident these works will improve safety at this critical intersection, encourage people to walk to the station and increase their use of public transport.”
The other $50,000 is being supplied by the Mount Alexander Shire council, with stage one expected to be completed within a month.
Deputy mayor Sharon Telford said the works would protect pedestrian safety and provide greater peace of mind for commuters.
“With about 18,000 commuters using Castlemaine Railway Station each month, the intersection on the corner of Kennedy and Templeton streets is a hive of activity,” she said.
“A raised pedestrian crossing and new kerbing will better define the intersection and provide greater visibility for cars and buses.”
Public Transport Minister Jacinta Allan said regional areas would be critical to the state’s future.
“The Victorian government recognises the critical role regional Victoria plays in the state’s future growth and is investing to improve transport connections, encourage tourism and boost the economy in our regions,” she said.
“Castlemaine Station provides a gateway to Castlemaine for many workers, residents and tourists, and we’re pleased to partner with Mount Alexander Shire on these important safety and accessibility works.”
The first stage of works also includes footpaths, line markings and signage at the main entrance onto Kennedy and Templeton Streets.
Works will be undertaken between the hours of 9.30am to 3.30pm on weekdays and traffic management will be in place for the duration.
