Title of Show is a self-referencing one-act musical about two guys writing a musical about two guys writing a musical.
The production has long-been an ambition of community actor Joel McDonald.
When the decision was made that this would be the year Title of Show got to Bendigo, the small group of passionate performers crowdfunded a budget and began rehearsing in each other's living rooms.
The result is an intimate musical that is full of laughs, clever songs and excellent performances.
McDonald and Jason McMurray share the stage with Alicia Barker and Melissa Harrington, while Cheryl Long on keyboard as four creatives trying to write a musical in three weeks for a New York theatre festival.
An intimate musical where audience and cast can look each other in the eye is difficult to pull off but the small cast makes it comfortable.
Songs surround banal topics like writer’s block and filling in forms are made entertaining by some complex vocal arrangements and energetic stage work.
Title of Show is also overflowing with musical references, theatre jargon and pop culture talk that people with a passion for theatre will adore.
Music and lyrics in the many upbeat tunes have a vibe that runs in the same vein as Flight of the Conchords or The Mighty Boosh - surreal, slightly odd but very entertaining.
The production also reminds anyone who has put pen to paper that the right motivation can produce amazing results.
Title of Show proves self-reference and ambition combined with four chairs and keyboard can make a musical.
Title of Show (M) is showing at the Bendigo Theatre Company Art Shed in Allingham Street, Golden Square, from November 26-29.
