The event raises money for prostate cancer research and awareness and features a 7.5 kilometre run and a 3.5 kilometre walk around the outside of the track.
Organising committee member Keith Macdonald said last year’s event attracted 200 people and organisers were hoping to surpass that this year.
“Last year we raised a bit over $5000 and we’ll be looking to do a bit better than that this year,” he said.
“People can donate or participate or they could raise some sponsorship if they wish.”
Now in its fourth year, the event started as an extension of the traditional Eaglehawk to Bendigo run, but this year moves to the racecourse for the first time.
“It’s on the back of what was traditionally the Eaglehawk to Bendigo which has run for 50 years,” Mr Macdonald said.
“The last last three years it’s been on the traditional Eaglehawk to Bendigo course but this year we’ve shifted it down onto the racecourse to make the whole thing a lot safer for the participants and officials.”
Mr Macdonald said the event took its name from the fact that those afflicted with prostate cancer were often fathers.
“It’s the most common cancer in men and it’s as common as breast cancer in women,” he said.
“You might want to raise some funds for your dad or your grandpa or your brother or whoever.”
Mr Macdonald said community members who were unable to participate were welcome to come along and cheer on the athletes.
“Eaglehawk Citizens Band is playing there, so they’ll entertain those that want to come along and have a look,” he said.
Every race finisher will receive a medal supplied by the Poyser Motor Group.
Run for Dad is on September 6 at the Bendigo Racecourse.
The event begins at 10am for runners and 10.30am for those choosing to walk with breakfast served upon completion.
