THE unwillingness from Australian politicians to legislate same-sex marriage is “distressing” to young people coming to terms with their sexuality, says Bendigo Senior Secondary College principal Dale Pearce.
Mr Pearce said while a broad spectrum of opinions was represented by the school’s student body, the broad student view at BSSC was in support of legalising same-sex marriage.
“Young people, irrespective of which school they’re in, are a little more inclined to be progressive in their views,” he said.
Mr Pearce said he was disappointed the Coalition voted on Tuesday evening against allowing a conscience vote on the issue of same-sex marriage.
“It’s unfortunate that our elected representatives are unable to vote on the basis of their own consciences.
“It’s another good illustration of party politics getting in the way of [making a decision] which might represent the wider community view. It seems clear that the community consensus is in favour of same-sex marriage.”
