Awards will be presented for the premier 2YO, 3YO, sprinter, middle-distance, stayer and picnic horse of the 2014-15 racing season.
One of the section winners will also be crowned the Bendigo Horse of the Year.
Today we look at the nominations for the RPI Australia and Brian Gentle Racing Sprinter of the Year.
Amaretto – trained by Adam O’Neill: The lightly-raced mare sprung to prominence in her four-year-old season.
Amaretto had four starts for O’Neill for the season for three wins and a fourth placing.
The daughter of Easy Choice started with an easy win in 0-58 class over 1100m, before backing up with a narrow victory in a benchmark 64 over 1100m.
Amaretto ran fourth at Sandown over 1200m before dropping back to 1100m and winning a Benchmark 70.
All three of Amaretto wins were on his home track at Bendigo.
Lazyaxl – trained by Shaun Dwyer: The son of Bianconi ran fourth to the smart Stratum Star at stakes level at Flemington in October and followed up with two unlucky unplaced runs at Moonee Valley on Cox Plate Day and at Flemington on Emirates Stakes Day.
The three-year-old hit his straps with back-to-back wins at Echuca and Moonee Valley at his most recent two starts.
Last month at Moonee Valley, Lazyaxl produced a career-best run to lead all the way over 1200m and win a Benchmark 70 by the best part of four lengths.
For the season, Lazyaxl had 12 starts for two wins and two fourths.
Tennessee Lad – trained by Kym Hann: Tennessee Lad made a brilliant start to the 2014-15 season with two wins from his first three starts.
He won a Showcase Benchmark 70 in fine style at Mornington in August before running second in a Benchmark 78 over 1300m at Mildura.
After a three-week freshen, Tennessee Lad, a son of unfashionable sire Potter, won a Showcase Benchmark 78 at Cranbourne.
Both of Tennessee Lad’s win were on heavy tracks.
Tennessee Lad had a 30-week spell and then had five more runs before the end of the season, but failed to fire.
The Bendigo Horse of the Year awards will be held on Saturday, August 15 at Silks Function Centre.
Tickets are $75 and bookings can be made by phoning the Bendigo Jockey Club on 5448 4209.
