Lavey scored 14 points, including four three-pointers, to go with three rebounds and four assists, as the Opals won impressively 86-65.
Lavey’s Lady Braves team-mate Elyse Penaluna had nine points, four rebounds and three blocks.
Bendigo Spirit duo Belinda Snell and Kelly Wilson played limited minutes in the clash.
Snell scored five points and had two rebounds, while Wilson had two assists.
Game two in the three-match series will be played on Wednesday night in Frankston. Game three will be played in Ballarat on Friday.
The series is a warm-up for the Opals’ Oceania Championship clash with New Zealand. Game one of that series will be played in Melbourne on August 15.
