The former Bendigo Pioneers and Eaglehawk footballer was rated one of the best punters last season in US college football.
He was overlooked in this year’s NFL Draft and attended a three-day training camp with the Indianapolis Colts, but was not signed by the Colts.
That’s left Irwin-Hill’s career in limbo.
To give himself the best opportunity to make the next level, Irwin-Hill needs to attend more training camps across the US.
The training and travel is expensive and that’s why Irwin-Hill has called for help.
The 24-year-old has posted a page on www.gofundme.com where his supporters can donate money to help his cause.
Irwin-Hill, who no longer has the support of his athletic scholarship, is currently conditioning at a training facility called Acceleration in Naperville.
He is also doing Bikram Yoga to improve his flexibility, balance, and mental and physical control, as well as staying in touch with his coaches from Prokick Australia regarding punting mechanics.
Prokick Australia’s Nathan Chapman said the average time it takes to make an NFL roster is two to three years.
“It’s not easy and Sam just has to keep grinding away,’’ Chapman told the Bendigo Advertiser recently.
In 2010, under Chapman's guidance, Irwin-Hill turned his back on Australian football and earned a scholarship to a community college in San Francisco.
After two seasons in San Francisco, where he was rated the number one junior college punter in the country, Irwin-Hill transferred to Arkansas where he competed in the SEC conference, arguably the premier college football division in the US.
Irwin-Hill’s ability to kick with both feet turned heads in Arkansas and he created national headlines in the US when he ran 51 yards to score a touchdown off a fake punt. The other highlight was a booming 79-yard punt against South Carolina.
