Organiser Rachael Karpman said they were just 12 crocheters short of breaking the record of 427 people crocheting simultaneously.
The world record attempt was held at the Prince of Wales Showgrounds as part of CraftAlive.
Ms Karpman said while coming so close was "a bit heartbreaking", they would be back next year to try again.
"It was still really fun and everyone had a really great time," she said.
The squares crocheted during the attempt will be sewn into blankets and distributed to people in need around Bendigo.
Ms Karpman said organisers estimated about 5000 people attended CraftAlive across three days.
