Bendigo Magistrates' Court was expected to hear the appeal on Monday, but it was withdrawn.
Drew pleaded guilty to charges relating to the May 13 burglary at Lockwood Primary School, where he attempted to steal boxes of school equipment and other items.
He was also caught driving on ice three times in two months in Bendigo last year, and used a stolen debit card to make eight purchases on August 22.
Drew will be required to complete a 12 month community corrections order once he serves the jail term.
MAY 21: A man who attempted to steal boxes of laptop computers and other equipment from Lockwood Primary School, among other offences, will appeal an eight-month jail sentence.
Matthew Drew, 23, of Long Gully, pleaded guilty in the Bendigo Magistrates' Court on Thursday to multiple charges in relation to the May 13 burglary and three drug-driving offences.
Magistrate Richard Wright handed down an eight-month jail sentence and a 12 month community corrections order for the offences, which will be appealed.
A guilty plea reduced the jail term from 12 months.
The court heard Drew had left boxes of school equipment neatly piled alongside buildings at Lockwood Primary School after ransacking several rooms.
One box contained nine laptop computers. It was alleged the equipment was intended to be collected by other people in a vehicle.
Police caught Drew after they noticed him fleeing from near the school's canteen.
He was found with DVD remotes and other items that could be carried in his possession.
Prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Alan Walker said the burglary began at 2.30am on May 13 when Drew gained entry through an unsecured door.
Defence counsel Peter Baker told the court Drew had struggled with ice use and alcohol abuse since 2011 after a relationship breakdown.
His drug abuse led him to lose his driver's licence and his job as a truck driver.
Mr Baker said after a previous jail sentence, Drew attempted to get his life back together.
"He was doing fine, but became mixed up with the wrong people again," he said.
"He couldn't find any ongoing work.
"He will become a father soon and has made it known that he wants to be a responsible father."
Drew was caught driving under the influence of ice three times in Bendigo in November and December last year.
He was also caught using a stolen debit card to make eight purchases in Bendigo on August 22 last year.
The court heard he spent $554 at supermarkets, liquor stores and in online purchases.
The owner of the debit card was in hospital at the time due to psychiatric issues.
Drew has spent nine days in custody since his arrest.
He will appeal the jail sentence at the Bendigo Magistrates' Court on May 25.
