On October 31 this year the Suns will hold a gala ball and launch the club’s book Rising Suns – A History of the Strathdale-Maristians Cricket Club.
Rising Suns is the third local cricket book to be written by Eaglehawk Cricket Club great Darren Rodda.
After completing Eaglehawk and Strathfieldsaye cricket club’s history, Rodda started his research for the Strathdale book in December, 2012.
“As powerful as Strathdale has been in modern times, it wasn’t that way forever,’’ Rodda said.
“The club had no money… moved its home ground a couple of times.”
Fittingly, Suns’ greats Kevin Crawford, Gerard Sheehan and Richard Murphy wrote the foreword for the book.
“In the 63 years of the club there’s never been a season where at least one of those three men hasn’t played,’’ Rodda said.
“Kevin, Gerard and Richard were the constants through some very hard times for the club.”
Rising Suns includes photos of every senior and junior premiership team in the club’s 63-year history.
Book orders are currently being taken. Orders for the book or expressions of interest for the gala ball can be made by emailing the club at smcc@club.cricketvictoria.com.au
Renowned cricket journalist Gideon Haigh and comedian Andrew Startin will be guest speakers at the gala ball.
