BERNIE Harrower could have coached his last game with the Bendigo Spirit.
The two-time WNBL championship coach revealed after Sunday’s grand final loss to Townsville that the Spirit board informed him two weeks before the play-offs that his job would be advertised at the end of the season.
Harrower and the Spirit board have had a tense relationship all season and it appears it reached breaking point just prior to the play-offs.
“The club is going to advertise my job, so I really don’t know what my future holds,’’ Harrower said.
“I really don’t know what is going to happen from here.”
Spirit chairman Greg Bickley said the board would not comment about Harrower’s future until after Tuesday night’s board meeting.
Harrower pulled no punches when it came to the Spirit’s board.
“This playing group has worked under extreme adversity off the floor this year,’’ Harrower said.
“It takes its toll… there’s been a lot of things happen at the club this year that shouldn’t have.
“Our full concentration should have been on getting better and it wasn’t. We really lacked a lot of support.”
Harrower said the decision to advertise his job hurt his side’s hopes of winning a third-straight title.
“The girls know that the club is going to advertise my job and that puts them in a situation where they don’t know their own future or the future of the club,’’ he said.
“Those things take their toll.”
Harrower was unsure what he’d done to upset the board.
“That’s something you’d have to ask the board,’’ he said.
“I do my job. I’ve proved I do it well because we won two championships in a row, played in three grand finals in a row and we’ve had six play-off appearances.
“I’m not sure what else I could do.”
The Spirit playing and coach group returns to Bendigo on Monday afternoon.
