Police first breath-tested the Bendigo man after the dual cab Toyota Hilux he was driving crashed into a tree about 7.30pm on Andrews Road, Maiden Gully.
The 20 year-old was taken to Bendigo Police Station where he returned a blood alcohol reading of .165 per cent.
His licence was immediately suspended and a notice issued to attend court.
Police allege about an hour later the man returned to the scene of the accident in a borrowed vehicle.
A police officer recognised him and he was again stopped for a preliminary breath test and recorded a reading of .136 per cent.
The man was issued with a summons to appear in court on two counts of drink driving and driving while suspended.
Bendigo Highway Patrol Acting Sergeant Peter Dyer said it was fortunate the man had not crashed into another vehicle and had not hurt himself in the crash.
"What possessed him to borrow another vehicle and return to the scene of the accident beggars belief," he said.
The vehicle was valued at more than $60,000.
The accident came as police conducted a three-day blitz on drink and drug driving as part of Operation Raid.
Acting Sergeant Dyer said visiting Booze Bus officers and members of the Bendigo Highway Patrol conducted more than 4500 preliminary breath tests from Friday night through until Sunday, with only the Maiden Gully crash driver recording a positive reading.
"It was a great result given the volume of tests we conducted," he said.
"It shows the people of Bendigo are doing the right thing and the messages are getting through.
"We hope drivers continue this behaviour."
