Adam Cabo, 32, pleaded guilty in Bendigo Magistrates Court on Monday to burglary and theft.
Cabo had been drinking at a Bendigo pub on the night of April 19 when he decided to break into Metal Mosh on Mitchell Street.
At about 9pm, he climbed up to the first floor shop entry and used bolt cutters to force his way into the store.
Cabo stole $2500 from the business, including $700 from the cash register and $1500 from a safe, which he removed from the property.
Several pairs of sunglasses, a smoking pipe and a quantity of synthetic cannabis were also among the stolen items.
The court heard Cabo had previously made inquiries about the use of CCTV cameras at the shop.
When police executed a search warrant, Cabo helped officers retrieve the items, but said he had thrown the safe in Burrumbeet Creek.
Defence lawyer Peter Baker told the court his client had moved to Bendigo to support his terminally ill brother and was facing significant financial difficulties.
Addressing the magistrate, Cabo said he was suffering from mental health issues and had "hit rock bottom", but had engaged services to get his life back on track.
Magistrate Patrick Southey said pre-planned burglaries were serious offences and needed to be denounced. He jailed Cabo for two months, but wholly suspended the sentence for a year in recognition of the man's guilty plea.
