WHEN Greg Holmes moved to Wedderburn last year, one of the first things he did was join the Wedderburn Korong Vale sub-branch of the RSL.
The veteran of Operation Desert Storm quickly became a valued member among his fellow veterans, regularly attending meetings and taking part in Anzac Day and Remembrance Day marches and ceremonies.
On Thursday morning, the flag at the Wedderburn RSL Hall on the main street was at half-mast as a sign of respect to Mr Holmes, his mother Mary Lockhart and step-father Peter Lockhart, who died at their Wedderburn-Logan Road homes on Wednesday.
President of the Wedderburn Korong Vale RSL Bob McKenzie said he did not know who had made the gesture, but it demonstrated the level of respect shown to Greg.
"He was a good club man, a good bloke," Mr McKenzie said.
The 48 year-old was an armourer during his active service and was more than willing to lend his skills with weaponry to the RSL sub-branch.
Mr McKenzie said Greg had played an active part with the RSL.
"He was going to assist us in putting a piece of military equipment up on the wall," he said.
"From his time in Iraq, he had become an expert in these sorts of things.
"He was well-liked among our members."
The president of the local RSL branch said Greg had faced some personal struggles since returning from war and had been close to his family living just across the road.
"He spent a lot of time going over to his parents," Mr McKenzie said.
The Wedderburn Korong Vale RSL held a special meeting on Thursday night to offer support and information to members about the previous evening's events.
Mr McKenzie said parents Mary and Peter Lockhart would also be "sadly missed" by those involved with the RSL.
"They were just good people," he said.
