Vision Australia's Bendigo manager Ruth O'Connell said the biennial fundraiser, which runs every two years, had been going since 2004.
She said organisers were expecting at least 270 people to turn up to the auction, which kicked off just after 8pm.
"We're hoping to raise $15,000," she said.
She said the auction was a fun event that wasn't about the best painting selling for the highest bid.
But asked which artwork she thought could be a highlight of the event, she said international cyclist Zak Demster was in with a chance.
"I really don't know what will sell the best," she said.
"But I will say Zak Dempster, he's put some fake grass and put some mountains around it, with some cows and some people on bikes, and it's actually the Tour de France."
Vision Australia Victoria and South Australia general manager Leigh Garwood said the night had a dual purpose.
"The key is not only is it raising our profile, but it is in Bendigo and it's the community fundraising," he said.
Ms O'Connell thanked businesses and community for coming together for the night.
"We thank the community for supporting us so much, they continue to support us on and on and on," she said.
