Griffin said on Thursday he had not fully recovered from a knee injury sustained in his recent Timberman 70.3 victory.
"Although I have had almost daily treatment and tried to to train through the pain and discomfort, it's been evident these past few days I can't keep doing that as the problem is getting worse.
"Time off this week has not helped and even if I took the rest of the week off it
still won't be right to tackle a world championship field on Sunday."
Although bitterly disappointed to be out after eight months preparation, Griffin said he achieved some great results in his latest racing campaign across the United States.
He will be at Mont Tremblant to watch the duel for the Ironman 70.3 world title unfold.
A world duathlon title victory earned Griffin the Bendigo Advertiser Sports Star of the Year award in 2006-07.
Now in its 50th year, Sports Star is proudly supported by Prime 7 and Bendigo Bank.
