WARRAGUL cyclist Brenton Jones raced to victory in Tuesday's opening stage of the Tour of the Murray road classic.

Racing for Avanti, Jones won the 156.6km duel from Mildura to Robinvale ahead of team-mate Neil Van der Ploeg and Raphael Freinstein.

An exciting start to the year by Jones included winning the Mitchelton Wines-backed Bay Criterium Series and the Andy's Earthmovers-sponsored criterium at the Bendigo International Madison carnival in March.

Wednesday's racing in the Tour of the Murray starts with a 33km criterium in Swan Hill at 9.30am before riders start the 98.2km trek from Swan Hill to Quambatook at 1.30pm.
