Castlemaine police Sergeant Trevor Bailey said the collision occurred about 7.30pm near Gaasches Road.
He said a car with a trailer, travelling north on the Calder Freeway, was hit by a small-medium rigid truck, possibly a Isuzu, which was also travelling north on the freeway.
He said no one was injured but the impact of the truck hitting the car caused the car and trailer to spin around before coming to a stop.
Police said by all accounts, the truck driver "must have known" he had hit the car.
Anyone with information is asked to phone Castlemaine police on 5473 2099 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
