The first year physiotherapy student at LaTrobe University, Bendigo was thrilled to be among four students from country Victoria to win a Give Them Wings scholarship.
He said it would help set him up for a great start for his future employment.
Mr Murphy intends on staying rural for his career.
"Anywhere in the country is good for me," he said.
The scholarships provide $2500 cash to help with course requirements and a Flying Doctor experience.
The awards are provided by the Royal Flying Doctor Service Victoria in partnership with rural Health Workforce Australia.
Rural Health Workforce Australia spokesman Tony Wells said the aim of the scholarships were to encourage more people to work in rural areas.
He said there was a "clear need" for more rural health services in rural Victoria.
He said Mr Murphy understood rural health needs.
