Two men are in police custody after fleeing the scene of a fatal car crash about 5am Saturday morning.
Police had been chasing the car at speeds of up to 90km/h after reports the four occupants, wearing balaclavas, had been attempting to break into a myki machine at Macedon Railway Station.
Police pursued the dark red Holden Commodore along Blackwood Road for about two kilometres until losing sight of the car.
They found the car at the corner of Blackwood and Forbes roads where it had failed to negotiate a corner in slippery conditions, flipping over.
Assistant Commissioner Jack Blayney said a male passenger in the car died at the scene and a woman was injured, while two other men fled the crash on foot and escaped into bushland.
Ambulance Victoria spokesman John Mullen said the 27-year-old Sunbury woman was in a stable condition with rib injuries and back soreness.
She was still under police guard at the Royal Melbourne Hospital on Sunday evening.
A 30-year-old Sunbury man was found on a roadside on the outskirts of Gisborne around 9.45am.
A second man, a 32-year-old from Diggers Rest, turned himself in at Gisborne Police Station and is assisting police with their inquiries.
The man, who has minor injuries, was arrested and will be interviewed by police.
Assistant Commissioner Jack Blayney said the crash is being investigated by the Major Collision Investigation Group detectives with oversight from the Professional Standards Command.
“It’s very early days in terms of establishing the circumstances," he said.
"The members are distressed, our members work to save lives, they know the perils and the risks associated with policing.”
The incident followed a triple road fatality near Warrnambool on Friday night.
