A NEW South Wales man is in a critical but stable condition at The Alfred after he was seriously injured in a head-on collision near Toolleen on Thursday.

The 38-year-old man was driving south along the Northern Highway when he lost control of his vehicle and collided with a tree at 4pm.
Passing motorists worked to extinguish a fire in the vehicle until emergency services arrived, with police praising their quick-thinking.
It took crews just under an hour to free the man who was trapped in the car.
The man suffered injuries to his chest and legs, and was airlifted to Melbourne.
Police are still investigating the cause of the collision.
The Northern Highway was blocked in both directions for about an hour.
