The woman was mushroom picking at a Macedon forest with a group of people, when the group dispersed but agreed to meet up again at an allocated spot at noon.
But instead of going to the meeting spot, the woman instead left the forest by herself and caught a train to the city.
When the woman failed to show up to the meeting spot at noon her companions feared for her safety and called the police.
Helicopters and a dog squad were deployed to find her.
The woman got in contact with police at 6.30pm to let them know she was fine.
UPDATE 5.50PM: POLICE helicopters have been deployed to search for the missing woman in Macedon.
A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the woman did not speak English and had only been in the country for a couple of weeks.
She said the woman had been mushroom picking this morning with a group of people at a pine plantation off Old Camp Road but failed to return to the designated meeting spot at noon.
She said police were concerned for her welfare as it was getting cold.
She said the dog squad and the Victoria Police air wing had been deployed to search for her.
She said the woman was wearing grey pants and a green jacket.
She said anybody with information should contact police.
EARLIER: POLICE are searching for a 70-year-old woman in Macedon.
A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the woman was with a group of people at Old Camp Road in Macedon when she went missing today.
She did not have any further information.
