Bendigo’s first elite soccer franchise celebrated its first National Premier Leagues Victoria win on Saturday when it defeated North Geelong 3-2.
FC Bendigo had been competitive in its first five matches, but only had one draw to show for its work.
However, everything fell into place on Saturday in Geelong.
A first-minute goal from George Slefendrofas and a brace from English import Matthew Breeze gave FC Bendigo a 3-0 lead.
The home side bounced back with two late goals, but it was not enough to deny FC Bendigo an historic first win.
“It was an exciting day for the club,’’ FC Bendigo coach Steve Martin said.
“It’s been a lot of work to get to this point and I’m happy for the players that the hard work has paid off.
“We’ve been telling the players that we can be a good side in the NPL and it’s good to get a win to reinforce that.
“North Geelong is a tough place to get a win… it was a very physical game, so for the boys to hold and win was a great result.”
The three points lifted FC Bendigo off the bottom of the NPLV 1 ladder.
FC Bendigo returns home this Saturday night to tackle ninth placed Dandenong City.
“It’s important we back that win up with a strong performance at home,’’ Martin said.
“We’ve had really good support at our two home games and we’d love to get our first home win this week.”
The FC Bendigo under-20 side suffered a 5-1 loss to North Geelong.
