Hicks, 21, of Long Gully, has pleaded not guilty to the murder of baby Zayden Veal-Whitting.
Zayden was found by his mother, beaten to death in his cot, on June 15, 2012.
The Crown alleges Hicks committed a series of burglaries overnight on June 14/15 and entered Zayden's Eaglehawk Road home.
It is there the Crown alleges he stole a wallet and sunglasses and killed the child.
Defence counsel David Hallowes has told the court Hicks did not enter the property and did not kill Zayden.
Mr Hallowes said the Crown could not prove Hicks was the only person out that night with dishonest intent.
