GOLDEN Square barely put a foot wrong during the home and away season, as shown by the fact it finished 17 points clear on top of the ladder.
But being the clear standout side of the home and away season ultimately amounted to nothing for Square as it came up well short against Bendigo United in last weekend’s grand final.
Last week’s 164-run grand final loss to the Redbacks was just the second defeat of the season for Square, which sat in top spot for all 13 rounds.
One of Square’s strongest traits of the season was its fighting ability, which got it out of several tight situations, but it eluded the side with the bat last Sunday when it capitulated for just 119 chasing 284 to win the flag.
Considering the last three games Golden Square played were two losses and a rain-affected semi-final draw against Eaglehawk, the side was far from its best when it mattered most.
Coach Scott Johnson (464), first-year captain Tim Wood (437) and Jason Johnson (403) all topped the 400-run mark for the season to be the best of the batsmen.
Luke Baird had a breakout season with the ball, claiming 32 wickets.
Young wicket-keeper batsman Jake Higgins made his mark, averaging an impressive 72.0 from 11 innings.
