Mr Andrews announced spending of $11.5 million yesterday to rebuild Kyneton Primary School next to Kyneton Secondary College to form an education precinct as per the Kyneton education plan.

“Kids in Kyneton can’t get a first-rate education in a second-rate classroom,” Mr Andrews said.

“Only Labor will completely rebuild Kyneton Primary School, to give our kids the best start.

“Classrooms will be modern, comfortable and safe and local jobs will be prioritised."

The previous Labor government developed the plan, under which the two schools and Bendigo TAFE campus would be on the same site. The TAFE campus has since closed due to cuts.

Facilities at the schools missed out on Building the Education Revolution upgrades on the basis they would be rebuilt under the plan.

Labor says the current Coalition government abandoned many projects halfway through rebuilding.

Responding to yesterday's announcement, Liberal candidate for the seat of Macedon Donna Petrovich said Labor had let Kyneton down during its term.

"The non-funding of the Kyneton education plan by Labour during their term of government has left Kyneton primary and the Kyneton education plan high and dry," she said.

"Now it seems, through a knee-jerk response, Labor and its recently arrived candidate have ditched the Kyneton education plan and are promising a stand-alone primary school."

Mrs Petrovich said Labor had failed to make a budget allocation to the education plan during its previous term.

"In contrast, the Coalition has done a state-wide audit of all schools and has allocated $628,000 for maintenance specifically for Kyneton secondary and is reviewing maintenance for Kyneton Primary School," she said.

"I have been committed to this area for 23 years and will work with the community and the Napthine government to ensure delivery of well-thought through outcomes for Kyneton and the rest of the Macedon Ranges."

Kyneton Primary School declined to comment.
