Police believe a Toyota ute was travelling north on Eaglehawk Road just before 1am when the male driver and sole occupant turned left into Jackson Street and lost control.
The car is believed to have struck a median strip and crashed into a metal fence, which went through the front of the car and impaled the driver.

Police are appealing for witnesses and anyone with information about the collision is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000
