RESIDENTS fearing for their children's safety have made a heartfelt plea to the City of Greater Bendigo to cut down a "dangerous" tree in Spring Gully.

A petition with 308 signatures was presented to council this week regarding the tree in Spring Gully Drive, which has dropped five limbs in 12 months.
When asked if council could guarantee the safety of nearby residents, presentation and assets director Darren Fuzzard said while he couldn't guarantee anything, the tree was "in no immediate risk of failure". He said three arborists had inspected the tree and deemed it in a "fair and reasonable condition".
However one resident has said "common sense must prevail", urging the branches be lopped.
Councillor Elise Chapman said the tree was "a serious safety issue". "These branches are big enough to kill or maim people and they are dropping randomly," she said.
Mr Fuzzard said council would return to the site in coming days to further inspect the tree.
