With more than 55 cast members and dozens of back- stage crew, orchestra members and volunteers, the Nexus Bendigo Youth Production will be performing The Wizard of Oz.
Producer Julie Lovell said finishing touches and final dress rehearsals were taking place before opening night on August 15. “The cast is amazing, the costumes and props will blow people away, it is going to be fantastic,” she said.
Ms Lovell said Nexus was about bringing students from across the region together to share their love of performing arts.
“We have kids from every single school in Bendigo, including TAFE, public school, private school, everyone taking part this year,” she said.
“Nexus means ‘connecting point’ and our mission statement is to connect lives, build community, nurture talent and foster excellence and these students wouldn’t have or make these friendships if it wasn’t for Nexus.”
Ms Lovell said the connection between the teenagers of today and Dorothy was the reason for choosing The Wizard of Oz for this year’s production.
“I love the journey in Wizard of Oz,” she said.
“Dorothy is a teenager and she starts off in a place so uncomfortable and unhappy and she gets surrounded by strife and trials and then realises that home is a great place to be.
“Which is not always the case for young people and that is why Nexus is such a great place, we can provide that other home were they feel they belong and eventually Dorothy feels the same.”
The Wizard of Oz will be staged at the Strathdale Community Hall for six shows, beginning on August 15.
