Construction of the $150,000 play equipment started yesterday as a fence and signs were put up around the site.
That will soon be followed by foundation work, with a trampoline and weaving poles to be the first pieces installed.
Traders in Hargreaves Mall have expressed strong support for the new playground.
A crane will eventually be used to put the dragon’s head in place, and the City of Greater Bendigo says it is trying to construct the playground with minimal disruptions.
City of Greater Bendigo landscape architect Gary Lantzsch said most of the playground had been made in Bendigo.
“We ask everyone to be patient as the end result will be a great community asset in one of Bendigo’s premier public spaces.”
The play area will be officially opened on March 28.
