Lightning’s young guns will take on UB Ballarat Pride in the opening round of the 2013 Devine Victorian Netball League.
Wellington played a lot of her junior netball with Kangaroo Flat Football Netball Club and the Kangas Netball Club.
“It’s a great honour to play my first game of the 2013 season in my hometown of Bendigo,” Wellington said.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity to come and support the girls from Bendigo and the northern region who are making that next step into the VNL competition.
“They get to watch an amazing standard of netball across three levels of competition.
“I am so excited and really looking forward to it, even though I will probably be really nervous on the day.”
Coach of the VU Western Lightning 19-under team, Lyndell Bruce said Wellington was a great addition for this season’s play.
“She brings vast netball and basketball experiences with her to this level of competition,” Bruce said.
“At 180cm she has a great defensive game and an uncanny ability to read the play. Monica has made the adaptation to the Victorian Netball League with ease and worked to transition into our defensive line-up in what should be a great defensive combination.
“She is definitely a player to watch in 2013.”
