Mueck and Herbert both fired sizzling second rounds of four-under 68 at 13th Beach Golf Links yesterday.
Mueck’s bogey-free round followed a two-over 74 on Thursday and leaves him tied for 17th at two-under, four shots off the pace set by Andre Stolz.
Playing his second professional tournament, 17-year-old amateur Herbert looked like he would not make the cut before a barnstorming comeback on the back nine.
Herbert was even for the day – and four-over for the tournament – with nine holes to play.
But four birdies on the back nine helped Herbert reach the halfway point tied for 34th.
Herbert sunk seven birdies, a bogey and double-bogey yesterday – a big reversal from his five bogeys and sole birdie on Thursday.
After a two-under 70 in the opening round, Neangar Park’s Andrew Martin had a horror second round.
Teeing-off from the 10th, Martin reached the turn at three-over for the round.
A birdie on the par-five second gave him a glimmer of hope, but it was his last under-par hole and a double-bogey on the par-four ninth all but ended his chances of playing on the weekend.
