Leigh Flower, 24, borrowed a jerrycan from his friend on August 30 last year and went to Apco in Kangaroo Flat, where he filled up with $13 of petrol without paying.
He later went to Caltex in Golden Square and verbally harassed the attendant before taking money from the cash register.
The Bendigo Magistrates Court heard Flower ran from the scene and threw his hooded top and T-shirt into a nearby creek in an attempt to avoid detection.
He was arrested shortly after and has since served a total of 105 days in custody, in relation to a number of theft charges.
Magistrate Jennifer Tregent said the time served in custody had helped Flower understand the seriousness of the offences.
He was placed on 18-month community corrections order and must attend regular drug and alcohol rehabilitation sessions.
Man to face two rape charges

The charges include two counts of rape and multiple counts of causing serious injury to his ex-partner between 1997 and 2004.
NOTE: Mr Ellis was found not guilty by a jury of these charges on February 12, 2014.
