Local attractions including the Golden Dragon Museum, the Central Deborah Gold Mine and the Bendigo Tramways reported strong tourist numbers.
The Bendigo Visitor Centre has also recorded a large number of visitors travelling to the town during the summer holiday period.
Acting visitor services manager Nicole Pretty said people from all over the world had been visiting the centre and the town had been “buzzing since Boxing Day”.
“We have had people from New Zealand, Hong Kong and Germany as well as from interstate including Adelaide and Perth and local places,” she said.
Ms Pretty said the main reason visitors came to Bendigo was to catch up with relatives and friends. She said the most popular attractions were the trams and the Golden Dragon Museum.
Ms Pretty said a bumper January was expected, with an event being held every weekend.
“There are lots of activities and events being held, which are sure to draw lots of people to the town,” she said.
“We have the Jayco Herald Sun cycling tour, the Victorian Cycling Open Road Championships, a swap meet and the Bendigo Junior Classic.”
Melbourne couple Jud Nugroho and Theresa Pranata stayed one night in Bendigo, after also visiting Ballarat.
“We have never been to Bendigo so we thought we would stop here and have a look around,” Ms Pranata said.
“We went to the dragon museum and also a winery; everything has been really good,” Mr Nugroho said. “We will definitely come back.”
Matt Fowler and his girlfriend Li Zhang stopped in Bendigo for half an hour, after travelling from Epping in NSW.
“We thought we would do a road trip and visit Melbourne, Adelaide, Broken Hill and Dubbo,” Mr Fowler said.
“I have been here when I was little and thought it would be interesting to check out.”
Mr Fowler said the couple planned to visit the Golden Dragon Museum.
