THE Franciscan Order of the Catholic Church is so ancient that it has its own calendar of saints’ feast days for the members of the many Franciscan monasteries and convents who have over the centuries been canonised by the Church.

They say that there are a million people today, world-wide, who at some level or other aspire to follow the Rule of St Francis of Assisi. One such community is the Poor Clare Order of nuns in Edwards Street, Kennington.
The Poor Clares were founded by St Clare of Assisi and St Francis of Assisi in 1212. The sisters are an “enclosed order” of nuns and spend their days in prayer and penance following the counsels of perfection contained in the Gospels and the Franciscan Rule.
People of all faiths and no faith have always been attracted to St Francis of Assisi and his ideas of thinking less about self and more about the world and God’s wonderful creation.
The Eucharist, with a short homily after the Gospel reading, is celebrated each weekday morning in the public chapel at the Poor Clares at 8 am. All are welcome.
