Rob Vernon memorial draws big field to contest classic in Strathfieldsaye

MORE than 100 cyclists will line up at Strathfieldsaye for tomorrow’s Rob Vernon Memorial handicap.The long-running classic has drawn cyclists from as far afield as Albury-Wodonga, Hawthorn, Ballarat, St Kilda, Warragul, Geelong, Shepparton and many other clubs across the state.A strong contingent from Bendigo includes David Pell, Peter Ladd Jnr and Tim Hucker racing off scratch.A big year for Pell has included contesting the Tour of Ireland with the Drapac-Porsche team.The scratch bunch to contest the 112km race includes Shepparton’s Trent Sevenson, Albury-Wodonga’s Rhys Pollock, Footscray’s Adam Murchie, and Malaysia’s Adiq Othman.A year ago, Peta Mullens became the first female to win the Rob Vernon Memorial.A member of the Bendigo and District Cycling Club, Mullens will start from the 16-minute mark.Co-markers for Mullens include Bendigo clubmates David Fairburn, Shane Freer, Andrew Hayhow, Kel Jones, Jordan Lucas, Brad MacCallum, Justin Mollison and Russell Nankervis.Cyclists pursuing a hometown victory include Luke Knox and Brenton Slotegraaf (5 mins); Sam Crome, Tony Fitzpatrick, Andrew Pascoe, Nick Shipp, Travis Storer (10 mins); Adan Lennon, Justin Leske, Stephen Rooney, Jason Stirling, Andrew Ward (22 mins).The limit bunch off 32 minutes includes Bendigo’s Syd Anstee, Geoff Bennett, Leigh-Anne and Paul Dynon, David Mannix, Rick McIntosh, Bruce Tonkin and Jo Wall.Racing will start at noon at the Strathfieldsaye sports complex in Club Court, with the finish on Emu Creek Road at the tennis courts.The race winner is tipped to cross the line between 3pm and 3.30pm.A big afternoon of racing will include racing for the 17, 15 and 11-13 years age groups.First events start at the Emu Creek tennis courts at noon.
