THE Bendigo Marketplace redevelopment is running to schedule, despite a number of setbacks which threatened to halt progress earlier this year.Another stage of the redevelopment was unveiled yesterday, with new fashion and giftware stores the latest to open.But commercial builder Hansen Yuncken has only saved the shopping precinct from a late opening by working around the clock - a practice which had to gain Construction Forestry Mining Energy Union support to be implemented.Setbacks have included contaminated soil, inclement weather and delays in transport of overseas building material.Hansen Yuncken construction manager project director Shane Sheedy said about 150 builders had worked through the night for about three months to ensure the construction company met targets.The Advertiser believes late penalties for development projects such as the Marketplace could be as much as $20,000 per day.” We’ve had some shops open today and the external works are progressing on program,’’ Mr Sheedy said yesterday.” We are basically tracking on program.“The project is expected to be completed by Christmas for the northern car park entry, and the southern car park will be January next year.“Hansen Yuncken has deployed a large number of additional resources, drawing from local and Melbourne trades to make up for lost time, and the guys have worked around the clock to meet the Bendigo Marketplace requirements.“Three or four months ago we had our work cut out for us, we had early delays with contaminated soil.“Those issues were dealt with and we’ve worked around the clock to make up for lost time, and the proof is in the pudding with the opening of the centre today.’’
