A HEROIN addict and former prisoner has been remanded in custody after pleading guilty to breaking into and stealing from multiple cars and houses to feed his drug habit.Andrew Bawden, of Golden Square, began a spate of burglaries and thefts after being released from jail late last year. However, his crime spree came to an abrupt end after he left behind his own charge sheets and a DVD copy of a police interview at one of the properties he ransacked.Bawden pleaded guilty in the Bendigo Magistrates Court yesterday to multiple counts of burglary and theft. The court heard Bawden spent four years in jail before being released in November. His crime spree started shortly after his release.Prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Jeff Lavery said Bawden broke into numerous cars, often by smashing a window. He said money was often taken from the cars and on one occasion Bawden swapped a laptop he stole for drugs.Bawden also broke into numerous homes searching for drug money. He was arrested this month and charged with 24 offences before being released on bail.Leading Senior Constable Lavery said Bawden was provided with charge sheets and a DVD copy of the police interview before he left the police station. He said that less than an hour later, Bawden struck again. However, he was arrested again after police found the charge sheets at a home which had been broken into and ransacked. The DVD was found at a separate property. This time Bawden was kept in custody.A lawyer acting for Bawden said he had struggled since his release back into the community in November. She said Bawden stole to feed his drug habit and that he was often under the influence of drugs when he committed the crimes.Bawden was remanded in custody until March 31 for sentencing.
