BENDIGO’S future is looking greener following the announcement yesterday of an environment action plan that is expected to create more jobs. The state government has put up $175 million to boost employment in regional Victoria as industries make the transition to more environmentally friendly practices.Tradespeople, energy and water employees, manufacturers and scientists are expected to benefit as regional Victoria prepares to exploit opportunities in new green technologies.Launching the plan in Bendigo, the state’s regional and rural development minister Jacinta Allan said “the plan would provide significant new opportunities for regional Victorians.” Among those already leading the way is Bendigo businessman Antony Interlandi who has invented a new wind turbine system.Mr Interlandi’s invention turns wind power into electricity and can service up to 60 per cent of a household’s annual needs. His invention could mean a boost for local jobs after the patent was purchased by Grocon for an undisclosed amount. The company issued a statement that the turbines would be built in Melbourne, but promised that their assembly would take place somewhere in regional Victoria. The plan includes $5 million to help with the creation of up to 10 solar energy hubs across the state.Grants of between $250,000 and $1 million may also be available for communities that switch to solar, creating opportunities for more than 500 accredited solar PV installers.Ms Allan said the 18-point plan outlined the state’s steps to develop industries, secure jobs and foster new skills.
