Police officers were called to the scene in Pyke Street after the man crashed his car into Armco railing about 4.30am.
Sergeant Tony Kekich said the man then left the scene and the car but was found by police in Hargreaves Street.
The 33-year-old Harcourt man underwent a preliminary breath test and then was taken back to the Bendigo Police Station where he recorded a blood alcohol concentration of 0.120.
Sergeant Kekich said the road was closed for a number of hours and the crash caused damage to the railing in Pyke Street.
“The result of that accident could have been a lot worse,” he said.
