Works at Cooinda Park are ahead of schedule, with the community set to enjoy the $140,000 project before the month’s end.
A new four-lane, 14 metre long red and blue slide will replace the beloved three-lane rainbow slide destroyed in a suspected arson attack in January.
Project manager Orrin Hogan, of the City of Greater Bendigo, said the framework for the slide had gone up, but was not yet ready for public use.
“The slide will be in an exclusion zone until it is finished,” he said.
Mr Hogan said the greater area of the park, which includes other new equipment, would be open by late Friday, in time for the last weekend of the school holidays.
An additional $50,000 was spent on those upgrades, which included replacing two junior multi-purpose play units with slides, monkey bars, track glides and interactive play equipment.
Mr Hogan said works yet to be completed included landscaping, and the installation or rubber safety flooring, drainage works, and new turf.
Cooinda Park is located at Mackenzie Street West in Golden Square.
The destruction of the rainbow slide in January sparked outrage in the Bendigo community. Residents took to social media to vent their ire.
Council chief executive officer Craig Niemann told The Bendigo Advertiser at the time the rainbow slide was a custom made piece of play equipment.
