A NEW $140,000 playground is being built in Cooinda Park in Golden Square, replacing the popular slide which was destroyed by fire in January.
The playground will include a four-lane, 14-metre long slide with a 3.6 metre drop.
The other play equipment at the playground is also being replaced and upgraded.
City of Greater Bendigo parks and natural reserves manager Debbie Wood said the playground should be ready to use in a month.
“The excavation and earthworks required to install the extensive foundations required for the new slide are currently underway and depending on the weather we hope to have the project completed by the end of July,” she said.
Police initially charged two men with arson for the fire, believing the blaze was among more than 20 lit throughout Bendigo at the time. The fire caused more than $200,000 damage.
Not enough evidence was found and the charge was withdrawn. The two men have since pleaded guilty in relation to 23 other fires.
Police are continuing to ask the public for more evidence about the fire, at 1.25am on Sunday, January 24. Contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
