Related: Councillor referred to conduct panel
CITY of Greater Bendigo councillor Mark Weragoda appeared before a Councillor Code of Conduct panel on Wednesday in relation to a drink driving offence in March.
A two-person panel consisting of a lawyer and a commissioner from another council heard the case.
Councillor Helen Leach referred Cr Weragoda to the panel after he was caught driving with a blood alcohol reading of 0.125 on March 6, initially denying the offence to the Bendigo Advertiser.
The Municipal Association of Victoria assembled the panel.
Cr Weragoda said he could not comment on what was spoken about during the meeting, as it was a confidential matter.
"I don't know what the process will be from here," he said.
"Until the panel gives its verdict, I cannot comment on the proceedings."
The panel first needed to assess whether the case required a hearing before hearing from Cr Weragoda.
The maximum penalty it can impose on a councillor is two months leave, but it can also make the councillor apologise or offer a reprimand.
Cr Weragoda is the third councillor to be referred to a Code of Conduct hearing during the current term of council.
The panel ordered Cr Lisa Ruffell to make an apology after it was found she had breached the council's Code of Conduct seven times.
Seven councillors also referred Cr Elise Chapman to a panel after her female genital mutilation tweet.
