EDITORIAL: Victorian Teachers Games arrive in Bendigo
DAY ONE: Teachers games kick off in Bendigo
Teachers from around the state replaced their work shoes for sneakers as they prepared for the Victorian Teachers Games on Monday.
More than 2000 teachers gathered at the Bendigo Stadium to register for the games.
The groups compete for gold, silver and bronze medals in each sport.
They also compete for the Minister's Cup, awarded to the school team that best exemplifies the spirit of sportsmanship.
School Sports Victoria CEO Jude Maguire said the Games are a lovely way to be able to give something back to Victorian teachers for the work they do during the year.
It’s the only one of its kind in Australia that celebrates teachers.

“It’s the only one of its kind in Australia that celebrates teachers and the amazing work they do," she said.
"SSV programs are about trying to support kids being active.
"Through these games we can now support teachers to be active and have a bit of fun, too.”
She said she hoped the event was the best experience possible for teachers.
"It's great being able to give back to the teachers who give so much," she said.
She said it was a welcomed change from the thousands of student events the organisation held throughout the year.
St Albans Primary School grade three and four teacher Matt Van Opijnen said the week provided a good opportunity to network with other teachers.
"It builds work team morale and inclusiveness," he said.
"It's good to compete in this atmosphere."
Camberwell High School teacher Joel Cahir said the week would be a good time to get away.
"It is a great vibe because we are all in the same position of having had a really long term at school," he said.
"Now we can all have a laugh and let our hair down together."
Templestowe Valley teacher Bree McIntyre said it was about having a good time with good friends.
